Guilds, Crews & Finding Your Fellowship at the Faire

What if you and your friends came to the High Plains Renaissance Faire not simply as guests, but as a fellowship?

Perhaps you are a band of wandering musicians. A company of mercenaries. A household of nobles. A group of craftspeople practicing an old trade. A company of actors who cannot resist a bit of theatrical mischief.

Perhaps you have no idea yet. That's perfectly fine.

At the High Plains Renaissance Faire, we want to leave room for people to play, create, and build their own little corner of the Realm. One way to do that is through Guilds and Crews.

What Is a Guild or Crew?

Guilds and Crews are groups of friends, performers, historical enthusiasts, reenactors, cosplayers, craftspeople, or just wonderfully enthusiastic people who decide to share a common theme and bring it to life at the Faire. You don't have to be a professional actor. You don't have to be a historian. And you certainly don't have to have everything figured out before you start.

You might simply ask a few friends:

“Wouldn't it be fun if we all came to the Faire as a company of traveling apothecaries?”

Or:

“What if we formed a little Renaissance-era household?”

Or perhaps:

“We should absolutely be the town guard.”

Guilds: Come Teach Us Something

Guilds are groups built around a historical craft, trade, occupation, or community.

Imagine a Weaver's Guild demonstrating period textile techniques, a historical encampment showing how people lived on campaign, or a group of artisans demonstrating skills that have nearly disappeared from everyday life.

A Guild might teach guests about:

  • Historical crafts and trades

  • Period clothing and textiles

  • Cooking and foodways

  • Military life and camp life

  • Music and instruments

  • Games and pastimes

  • Historical occupations

  • Daily life during the Renaissance

  • Or just about anything else that helps bring the period to life

The goal isn't to put on a lecture.

It's to let people experience history.

A guest might stop to ask a question, watch a demonstration, try a simple activity, or discover something they never knew about the Renaissance. The Faire has space set aside for demonstrations, so get thee gear into shape and email admin@highplainsrenfaire.com to propose your demo!

Crews: Bring the Realm to Life

Crews are a little more theatrical.

A Crew might be a company of wandering minstrels, a Royal Guard, a group of adventurers, a theatrical combat company, or a band of characters who simply enjoy creating a little mischief wherever they go.

Crews help fill the pathways of the Realm with life.

They might greet travelers at the gate, tell tall tales around the tavern, challenge one another to a dramatic duel, sing as they wander, deliver messages for the Crown, or simply remain in character as they go about their day.

The important part isn't whether every interaction is scripted.

It's the willingness to play along.

Sometimes the most memorable moments at a Renaissance Faire aren't found on a stage.

They're the unexpected encounters:

  • A guard stopping you to ask where you're headed.

  • A minstrel inviting you to join a song.

  • A noble household arguing dramatically over who gets the best seat at the tavern.

  • A mysterious traveler appearing on the road with a story that may—or may not—be true.

That's the sort of atmosphere Guilds and Crews can help create.

You Don't Need to Be Serious About It

And this is important:

There is no pressure to form a Guild or Crew.

You can come to the Faire with your family. Come with your friends. Come in costume. Come in modern clothes. Wander the Realm for a day and enjoy being a guest.

But if you've ever thought, “It would be fun if we could all do something together…” — this is your invitation. Your group could be elaborate or delightfully ridiculous. You could spend months researching your historical trade and creating beautifully accurate costumes. Or you could start with a handful of friends, a shared idea, and a willingness to have fun.

There is room in the Realm for both.

Find Your People

One of the wonderful things about Renaissance Faires is the way they bring together people who might never otherwise meet.

The history enthusiast.

The theater kid.

The reenactor.

The craftsperson.

The cosplayer.

The musician.

The person who has always wanted to try stage combat.

The person who knows an alarming amount about medieval cheese.

The person who just really wants an excuse to wear a cloak.

A Guild or Crew can give all of them a reason to gather.

And once you find your fellowship, you may discover that preparing for the Faire becomes almost as much fun as attending it.

Plan your costumes together.

Research your characters.

Practice your songs.

Invent your rivalries.

Develop your group's traditions.

Give yourselves ridiculous titles.

Make memories before you've even reached the Faire grounds.

Join the Travelers of the Realm Facebook group to find your people!

Joining the Realm

Official Guilds and Crews at the High Plains Renaissance Faire are non-commercial groups whose purpose is to contribute to the atmosphere, education, and experience of the Faire.

Groups seeking an official presence at the Faire will submit by email a simple Charter Proposal describing their theme, activities, and designated Guildmaster or Captain. Chartered groups agree to follow the Faire's safety and conduct standards and to help create an environment of courtesy, welcome, and joyful merriment.

New Guilds and Crews will begin with a Trial Year during the 2027 season. It's an opportunity for everyone to discover what works, learn from the experience, and see where the fellowship might grow.

And remember: you don't need a Charter to start imagining.

  • Find your people.

  • Choose your banner.

  • Invent your story.

Then perhaps, come August 2027, you'll find yourselves walking through the gates of Fort Caspar together as something more than a group of friends.

The Realm is waiting.
